Setting Up The 8001 With Lookup File

Here I will explain how to set the Cipherlab 8001 to accept and work with a Lookup file. The lookup file will allow the user to scan an item and see the matching description or any other information in the lookup file on the display.

We will use the Forge Batch Application Generator explained in a previous post.

Application for the Cipherlab 8001 using a lookup file.

The lookup file that we are going to use must be in a CSV File Format (Comma Separated Value). It is a plain Text File that contains data separated by a comma.

Example of a Lookup File in CSV Format – 1234567898773, Crayon

The 1234567898773 will be the barcode we are going to scan and the “Crayon” is what will display on the display of the 8001.

Using the Application Generator, we need to set up the Lookup portion. Below is an example

Select the First Lookup File from the list on the left. In our Lookup CSV File we are using two fields, one is the barcode and the other the description. Fill in the number of fields 2. Make the Delimiter “44” which will give us a “,”. You need to fill in the maximum length of the first field, in our case 13 and the maximum length of the second field. I used 50 as the lengths of the second field varies. Field 1 will be our “Key Field” in our application.

The rest of the settings can be left as they are or customized to how you want the unit to react to different situations.

Now we can go to Form 1 and set up the application to allow us to scan the barcode, display the scanned barcode, the corresponding Description and the Quantity.

In the above Form we have selected the First Lookup File as we need to tell the 8001 to use a lookup file. Fill in the form to look like the example above. You will notice that where the scanned data appears, Field 1 is selected – the Key Field.

Field 2 is selected where the description is to be inserted from the lookup file. The rest is the Quantity which will be input by the keypad only.

Save the application and transfer it to the Cipherlab 8001 as explained in the first article about using the Forge Batch Application Generator.

When the download or transfer is complete you will notice a new item in the “Utilities” menu of the 8001 – Download Lookup.

Lookup File 8001

Select option 8 and follow the prompts and insert in the cradle. On the PC Application select “Transfer” and the “Send Lookup”. Choose your CSV Text file in the box that opens. Set Download Via to Cradle-IR, Your Com Port number and the Baud Rate should be 115200bps unless you have changed it on the Cipherlab 8001.

You can now scan the barcode that corresponds to the first field of your lookup ad it should display the description on the 8001’s display.

I hope this has given you an idea of how to use the Application Generator to program the 8001 to use a lookup file.

Using The Forge Batch Application Generator

A tutorial on the Cipherlab Forge Batch Application Generator for the 8001 PDT. It will work the same for the rest of the 8 Series PDT’s from Cipherlab. Screen sizes may differ and there will be additional features but the basics stay the same.

To install the USB Drivers and the Forge Batch Application Generator go to my previous post. Full instructions on the procedure and where to get the files here.

Once you have installed the USB Driver, obtained the comm port and installed the Forge Batch Application Generator we are ready to begin. Always make sure you have power applied to the dock of the 8001 for it to work.

Open the Application Generator

Location of Application Generator

This tutorial is written on a PC running Windows 10 but the location should be the same on all Window versions.

Once you have clicked on “8 Series Batch AG” the program will load and look like the image below. This is a complete blank form and we need to start with our first application.

On the Cipherlab 8001, when switched on, you are presented with a menu

  1. Collect
  2. Upload
  3. Utilities

When you select option 1 the screen displays a “Form”, Item and QTY. This is where you can scan a barcode and enter a quantity for stock take purposes.

On the Batch Application Generator screen on your PC, on the left hand column, you will see “Form”, click on “Form” and it will open 10 Forms that we can use.

First Application

For our first application we will look at the default application that is pre-loaded on the Cipherlab 8001 and how it looks on the Forge Batch Aplication Generator.

Forge Batch Application Generator

Form 1 above look like this on the Cipherlab 8001’s screen after choosing option 1 on the main menu (Collect).

To Transfer the Application to the 8001

Once you have written your application on the Application Generator, you need to transfer it to the Cipherlab 8001. Procedure as follows:

On the Application Generator select “File” and “Save as”. Give your application a name and click “Save”. This will save your application on your PC for later editing.

On the Cipherlab 8001 go back to the main menu and choose option 3 “Utilities” and then option 6 and follow the prompts. Now put the 8001 into its cradle.

Back on the PC on the Application Generator choose Menu item “Transfer” and “Send Application”. A new box appears.

Download via must be set for “Cradle-IR for the Cipherlab 8001.
Com Port must be set to the number given
Default Baud Rate 115200 bps. Unless it has been changed on the 8001.

The application will now be downloaded to your 8001.

Application using Menu and Forms

This is a simple application that was made for a client that needed the Cipherlab 8001 to have two functions.

  • To scan barcodes only with no quantities
  • To scan barcodes and enter quantities

Here we used Menu 1 and Forms 1 and 2. When they select option 1 on the main screen they are presented with a menu

The corresponding application on the PC looks like below

Forge Batch Application Generator

When the first option is selected on the 8001 “Scan Only” it sends you to form 2. If the second option is selected “Scan with QTY” its sends you to form 1.

The Forms 1 and 2 below

Form 1
Form 2

Its quite an easy application to use to change the application on the Cipherlab 8001 or 8200. In the next post I will explain how to program the unit to accept a “Look Up” file and display descriptions or other info when barcode’s are scanned. If you have any questions or need help with the Forge Batch Application Generator, you are welcome to contact us.

How to install the Cipherlab 8001

A short tutorial on how to install the Cipherlab 8001 and 8200 on your computer. This covers the USB kit, the RS232 model is slightly simpler.

Cipherlab 8001
Cipherlab 8200

Install the USB Drivers

First download USB Drivers (CP210x_VCP_Windows_v6.7) and install. This will install the USB Driver needed to make the Cipherlab 8001 communicate with your PC via the USB Port. It creates a virtual com port which we will get the number of shortly.

Once the drivers have installed connect the cradle to your pc with the supplied USB Cable, insert the 8001 in the cradle. It is important to make sure that you have power plugged into the cradle as the unit will not communicate without power.

When you connect the USB cable to your PC you will see the normal install message on your screen as the Cipherlab 8001 is installed like any other USB device.

Once installed and with the cradle connected, go to your Control Panel on your PC and navigate to Device Manager. Now look at the Ports and you will see that a new Virtual Com Port is present. Remember the Virtual Com Port number. You will need to insert the Com Port number in the utilities to enable communication between the 8001 and your PC.

Install the Forge Application Generator

Download the following file and install Forge Application Generator version 2.01(NEW)

Installing this file will add the Forge Batch Application Generator, PDF Users Guide and Utilities to your computer.

The Forge Application Generator program is used to develop or modify the application on the Cipherlab 8001 to suite your needs. An explanation on how this is done will follow in another article. For now we just need to get the scanned data downloaded from the 8001 to your computer.

Under Utilities click and run “Data Read”. This utility will receive the data you have scanned and entered in CSV file format (Comma Separated Values) which can be opened with Excel or imported into many Software Applications. Check with your Software Vendor on how to import this CSV file to your systems.

install the Cipherlab 8001
Data Read Application

The Data Read Application, once opened will look like the image above. In the section “Communication Parameters” select the Interface as Cradle – IR. Input the Virtual Com Port Number you obtained earlier in the field “COM port”.

The rest of the settings can be left as they are or customized at a later stage. You can select a directory where the CSV file will be downloaded to in the lower left corner.

When you have scanned or entered some data into the Cipherlab 8001 you can test the download function. On the Data Read Application click on the “Start” button. The application will now open a smaller box and wait for communication.

On the Cipherlab 8001 main screen select option 2 “Upload”. If all the settings are correct the Data Read Application will download the scanned or entered data successfully and you are ready to start using the 8001.

If you are using the Cipherlab 8200 the process of installing and downloading is the same.

If you have any questions or are struggling with your installation, please contact us.
