Stock taking barcode scanner are normally called Portable Data Terminals (PDT), Mobile Computers or PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant). They differ from normal barcode scanners in that they are portable, have memory, a keypad, a display, scanning module and powered by a battery.
We will refer to the entry level Cipherlab 8001 as an example of a stock taking scanner.
A stock take using the 8001 PDT will normally go as follows:
- Scan the barcode on the shelf/bin
- Count the items on the shelf/bin
- Enter the quantity using the keypad and press Enter
Once you have completed scanning all the shelves or bins, the unit is placed in its dock, which also charges the battery. The dock will be connected to the PC with either a USB or Serial Cable. Using the standard software which comes with the unit, the scanned data is uploaded to the PC in a CSV text file format. This file can be opened in Excel or imported into your accounting/stock taking program (Check with your software vendor).
The Cipherlab 8000 range of scanners are able to be programmed with Forge Application Software which comes included in the price of the PDT. This allows the customer to change the way the scanner inputs data to suite his needs. We assist with this programming method free of charge.
The Forge Batch Application Generator and USB Drivers can be downloaded here.

Honeywell Youjie YJ3300 USB entry level laser barcode scanner.
The YJ3300 is an affordable handheld laser barcode scanner and is an alternative to CCD scanners.
Equipped with world-class laser decoding technology, the
YJ3300 can be applied in a variety of environments. The
YJ3300’s pulsing-laser-line switch allows the user to easily
target the desired barcode and complete data transmission
with just the press of a button. This makes the YJ3300 the
optimal choice for menu scanning, point-of-sale, document
processing, and inventory control.
With improved laser scanning technology, the YJ3300 has
a longer working range and a wider scan field than a typical
CCD. The width of the scan line grows as the scanner moves
further away from the bar code.
The ergonomic trigger and handle of the YJ3300 fits
comfortably in any user’s hands and provides easy to use
operation. Additionally, the pulsing-laser-line switch design
decreases the continuous operating time of the laser engine,
thus increasing the time efficiency and reliability of the
scanner. Integrated with a common interface,the YJ3300
ensures fast and easy connections with the host or PC.
Wireless or cordless barcode scanners use radio frequency or Bluetooth technology to send scanned data to a dock, cradle or Bluetooth enabled device. The dock or cradle is attached to a computer via USB, Keyboard Wedge or Serial cable. The advantage of a wireless barcode scanner is that it provides freedom to move the scanner to the items to be scanned instead of bringing the items to the scanner saving time and resources. The wireless scanners improve productivity by allowing a longer scan range usually from 10m to 100m depending on the model. Some models include and internal memory which allows users to carry on scanning even when the scanner is out of its range. Once the scanner connects to its dock or cradle it will send the scanned data.
We also supply Bluetooth scanners that will connect directly to an Android, iPad or iPhone device.
Give us a call (011 425 5439) or email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your requirements and we will advise you on the correct model.
