General Purpose Handheld Barcode Scanner

We have a wide variety of handheld barcode scanners to choose from. From entry level 1D scanners to sophisticated 2D wireless units suited for almost every application. Scanners using different technologies like the entry level AS8050 which uses LED’s to transmit the scanning beam, Laser scanners like the 1250G use a laser diode to transmit a fine scanning line, Linear Imaging scanners like the 1300G use new technology LED’S to achieve a brighter beam to read barcodes at ranges superior to the normal CCD scanners. Area Imaging scanners are used to read 2D barcodes and are essentially a camera which takes a snapshot of the code, decodes it and transmits the data to a terminal.

General purpose handheld scanners are generally available in USB, RS232 (Serial) or Keyboard Wedge interfaces. The displayed barcode scanners  are our most popular selling scanners.

The different types of Barcode Scanner

  • Handheld
  • Presentation
  • Fixed Mount
  • In Counter
  • Corded and Cordless

Handheld Scanners

Handheld barcode scanners are the most common type of scanners around. You hold the scanner by gripping its handle, pointing it at the barcode and pressing the trigger.

Some models like the Datalogic QW2120 also come with a “Scan Stand”. This enables you to place the unit in the stand and using it as a hands free scanner by just passing the barcode in the scan field.

Handheld scanners come in corded and cordless models.

Presentation Scanners

Presentation scanners are designed to be mounted on a desk or checkout point. Items with barcodes are passed in front of the scanners scan field and these are read quickly and effectively.

Presentation scanners are found in the larger supermarkets.

Fixed Mount Scanners

Fixed mount scanners, similar to presentation scanners, can be mounted on machinery, conveyor systems etc. to read barcodes on boxes or parts as they move through the scan field.

These types usually have no manual triggers but scan continuously or are triggered automatically by some external method.

In Counter Scanners

As the name suggests – in counter scanners are designed to lie vertically and mounted into check out counters. These are found in the larger supermarkets.

Datalogic’s Magellan 9300i is a popular in counter scanner

Corded and Cordless Scanners

The Corded scanners make use of a cable to connect the scanner directly to a computer or POS terminal. Corded scanners are available with USB, Keyboard Wedge or Serial (RS232) cables with USB the most common. The scanner gets its power directly from the computer or terminal. When using the serial type a external power supply may be needed.

Cordless scanners make use of Bluetooth or some other radio frequency to connect to a base station. Bluetooth scanners can also connect directly to a BT enabled tablet or phone etc.

The wireless scanners Base Station, which also serves as a charger, connects to a computer or terminal with a cable. The distance that the scanner can operate away from the base station varies and depends on the model. The distances range from 10 meters to 100 meters.
